Sometime in 2021
It was late 2021 when Mom got the crazy idea of crossing the country in a van. We were just talking about bringing Hazel to meet Auntie Barbara’s dogs, Bella and Jesse, in Boston, but it was never going to happen in my mind. We had planned to end the school year a month early, and Mom thought it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take a family road trip. We’ve never made a road trip like this before, especially not with an older me and Hazel. And Hazel doesn’t like riding in cars. I kind of thought Mom was joking. I still thought Mom was joking when we were planning our route. I didn’t believe it when a 21-foot-long camper van was parked in our driveway. I still don’t believe it now, in the middle of the Mojave desert.
